This course explores connections between events described in the Old Testament and perspectives from science and historical reference sources. Topics include the creation of the universe, Earth, and humanity; the first and second rebellions of angels; Noah’s flood; giants on the Earth; Abraham; Sodom and Gomorrah; the ark of the covenant; and more. Participants should expect active discussion, questions, and commentary on these subjects.

While it is recommended that attendees read Bible Topics: Comparing Ancient References and Science to Biblical Events of the Old Testament by Ronald S. Vidra beforehand, it is not required. The book is available on the Barnes & Noble website. A PowerPoint presentation will also be provided during the course.

For thousands of years, people have buried their dead with affection and honor in ways that reflected their beliefs and values. “Typical burials” in America are disappearing due to a series of factors. Growing populations, a steadily changing climate, and personal finances are forcing many people to move to new burial methods. How acquainted are you with the process of cremation, green burials, and aquamation? They will require some adjusting on our part. Discover how best to plan for future decisions you or your children may need to make.

Scientists have long assumed that what makes us “us” is our brains—the 3.3-pound mass of 86 billion neurons with the consistency of soft fat, so delicate that it floats in a sea of cerebrospinal fluid to protect it from touching the skull. This idea has been challenged for centuries by reports of near-death experiences, first described by Dr. Pierre-Jean du Monchaux in the 1760s. Five to ten percent of our population has reported seeing and hearing events which would be absolutely impossible for those in a clinically dead state. The medical community is divided. The Greek Orthodox Church in York is much, much more than really good food festivals a couple of times each year. Participants will learn the story of this immigrant community founded a little over 100 years ago and some of the basics of the faith that sustains them on this journey.

In 1384, a linen cloth was discovered with a vague but distinct picture of a man who had clearly been crucified. Some people immediately assumed it was an image of Jesus of Nazareth. Then, carbon-14 dating placed it sometime in the 1200–1400 date range, which seemed to prove it was a hoax. Immediately, scientists began to disagree. They ran a number of other tests which definitely pointed to the time and location of Jesus’ resurrection. Was it fake or Christ’s real burial shroud? Study the facts presented and judge for yourself. It's a monumental historical question.
