Our news landscape is dominated by tragic scenes of people displaced by large tornadoes, blazing wildfires, raging floodwaters, and more. The term "natural disaster" is commonplace in the headlines whenever these heartbreaking scenes show up, but there isn't much "natural" about them. Certainly there are a lot of natural weather hazards, but taken on their own, they have a hard time becoming a disaster. Through a lecture, and some hands-on simulations and exercises in small groups, participants will learn how natural hazards combine with deep-rooted social vulnerabilities to create disaster.
